NEW BODY SCANNERS SEE THROUGH CLOTHES

Read the text and answer the questions in your notebooks.

Travellers at two US airports will soon be searched by new high-tech scanners. International airports in Los Angeles and New York have installed digital body scanners that can ‘see through’ clothing. The new machines will mainly search for weapons and explosives. They use the very latest technology, called millimeter wave imaging. Radio waves create a 3-D image of someone’s body to see if they are concealing anything dangerous. Government officials say the new equipment will make air travel safer. A spokesperson said: “Imaging devices are not a brand new security tool, but they are a brand new security tool for airports.” There are plans to install the devices in another 30 airports across the country. An official promised that passengers will prefer the scanner to a security guard patting their body.
The new technology has raised questions by privacy groups, who believe the scanning process is too detailed. They say the device can see too much of the naked body. A civil liberties spokesman said it was the same as a virtual strip search. He warned: “We need to make sure there are good safeguards. The temptation is great not to follow procedures when a celebrity or someone well-known is involved.” One female passenger at LA airport suggested that only female operators should be allowed to scan female passengers. She said she was highly embarrassed to see a male official looking at the digital image of her body. She was also worried the scanned images could end up on the Internet. It seems it’s only a matter of time, however, before the machines replace metal detectors.

  1. I was thinking about what places i would like to visit in Britain and here`s the first thing i remembered off: One day I would like to visit London Eye. There is no special reason for that, except i`ve always found it interesting. It`s a well.known, world-famous tourist attraction in the United Kingdom. I think it would be a great, unforgetable feeling to spin on it. That experience would be worth of remembering and that ride is certanly the thing i would never miss if I visited Britain. :)

  2. In the UK I would like to visit the famous center of tennis and sport, Wimbledon. It is a beautiful building where you can enjoy watching proffesional tennis but you can also learn about the history of this leading tennis tournament in a fantastic 3D Lawn Tennis Museum. A lot of people come every year there to enjoy and have fun and I would like also to do it to see real tennis, legendary players and to learn new experiences.

I am a fan of Chelsea and my dream is to go to one Chelsea`s match to feel that incredible atmosphere. Near Stamford Bridge is also a Chelsea`s history museum and the fan shop which i would also love to visit. 4. My favourite historic and touristic place in Britain is Stonehenge. It is a prehistoric monument located in the English county of Wiltshire, composed of earthworks surrounding a circular setting of large standing stones. The site and its surroundings were added to the UNESCO's list of World Heritage Sites in 1986 in a co-listing with Avebury Henge monument. Historians claims the Stonehenge was an observatory, but in the whole story, the most interestig thing is that archaeological evidence found in 2008 indicates that it served as a burial ground from its earliest beginnings. From all of this reasons, I'd like to visit Stonehenge monument.

  5. Hello. You asked yesterday which place in Britain I would like to visit. I thought about this question but i can't decide which is my favorite. I would like to visit London and call my family or friends from a red call box or to drive in a red double-decker bus. I would like to open an umbrella when it starts to rain there and feel, at least for a time, how it is to be an Englishman. I would also like to visit Scotland and hear their speech with the funny accent and learn something about their culture because I know very little about them. Of course, I would like to visit Wales too... and hear something on their mother tongue and count all of their sheep...XD by Domagoj Gajski

  6. Hello. If all my plans don't change, my future will be connected with Britain a lot (starting with this comming summer). I'm not shure what makes me happy the most, because I'm so excited about everything, about living so different from now. It would be great to explore the whole country, Wales and taste their lamb, Scotland and wear their skirts (not really :D) to see the Loch Ness Monster and all the beautiful landscape, London and drive in their cabs, Stonehedge and really everything. Whenever somebody mentions Great Britain, my very first thought are always so good, as good as he/she sad Utopia. I hope it won't disappiont me :DD
P.S. And yeah, I'd love to go out there and have an awsome time without folk music, to eject Sasa Matic, Sinan Sakic and those crew from my life.

  7. In Britain I'd like to visit London because it's a very different from living in Croatia. I wish to drive in their famous cab and red double - decker bus. Also, I'd like to visit famous buildings like Buckingham Palace, Palace of Westminister and others. I heard something about Thames by watching Only Fools and Horses.
Everyone who watches Only Fools and Horses has heard about Peckham, very special neighbourhood and many people recognize him because of humorous series. In Peckham, I have to visit pub The Nags Head. That's many places for visiting, but there are some of them.

  8. Hello...
I don't have a specific place that I visited in Britain. I think this country is very beautiful and has a great choice for younger and older life. I would like to ride in their red buses, which were full of stories. For a time while staying in the UK, and probably I would visit their nightlife. Britain has many attractions such as Stonehenge are well-known. My dad and brothers would be most likely looking forward Stamford Bridge, they really love football, as well as any man. Mom and I make time for it while the guys at the stadium, were shopping. In any case, I would definitely go visit the UK and I'm shure I will have good time. :D

  9. I thought about a place that I would prefer to visit in England and I finally decided-Regent's Park! The park is located close to London and it is a place where we can escape from the urban environment. Park is very calming and people can find peace. There is also a zoo, the oldest scientific zoo in the world which I would love to visit. I think this is the best place in England for a visit if you want to enjoy the journey, and at the same time have a rest.
